Work Day Schedule and Activities

Regular workdays are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, year 'round, unless that date falls on a holiday or conflicts with another restoration activity. In those instances we will move the work day out one week.

In 2013, only one regular workday will NOT fall on the 1st or 3rd Saturday: our February 2nd workday will be moved to Saturday February 9th in order to avoid a conflict with the Wild Things conference taking place on February 2nd. All other regular workdays will fall on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month.

The planned activity for a given work day is subject to change depending on the weather and what progress has been made on past workdays. The stewards anually submitt a  general workplan to the Forest Preserve staff for approval. This plan includes specific areas that will be worked in, what the habitat goal for that area is, and what types of invasives are in that area that need to be removed. What in that plan is done on any given work day is determined by the stewards and sometimes changes when they show up and see what the weather is like, if it has snowed recently, and how many volunteers show up.

We focus on buckthorn cutting from September through early April.

We pick garlic mustard in the April to early July.

Seed collecting is based on when a given plant matures and is often done by individuals outside of normal workday hours.
